Should you use "firstly...", "Secondly...", like linking words in each paragraph of your IELTS Writing Task 02 (IELTS Essay -AC/GM)

It is observed that most of the IELTS test takers write their essays using a lot of linking words like, "Firstly", "Secondly".....etc. particularly they tend to start each paragraph with a phrase that shows a sequence. It is not much expected in essay writing.

The following essay is an example where these sequencing words are not used at the beginning of the paragraphs.

Pets and their role in humans' mental health

The relationship between pet animals and mental health is a complex and multifaceted one. Studies have shown that owning a pet can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, offering a range of benefits such as companionship, purpose, routine, and emotional support.

One of the most significant benefits of owning a pet is the sense of companionship and social support they provide. For people who live alone or have limited social connections, pets can offer a sense of companionship and help to ease feelings of loneliness. In addition, pets have been found to provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be especially beneficial for people with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Pets can also have a calming effect on their owners, with studies showing that petting a dog or cat can lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones in the body. This can be especially helpful for people with anxiety disorders or PTSD, who may struggle with symptoms such as panic attacks and flashbacks.

Furthermore, pets can offer a sense of emotional support and comfort during difficult times. Therapy animals, such as dogs and cats, have been shown to have a positive impact on the mental health of people in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities. Similarly, pets can provide a sense of comfort and understanding that can be difficult to find in other humans, particularly during times of grief or loss.

In conclusion, the benefits of owning a pet for mental health are numerous and varied. Whether it is the companionship and social support they offer, the sense of purpose and routine they provide, or the emotional support and comfort they offer during difficult times, pets can be a valuable part of a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing.
