How to answer "True","False","Not Given" type questions of IELTS Reading Task ? -IELTS Reading Tips#02

Approaching this type of questions  is little tricky in IELTS  reading . But  once you understood the techniques ,it is  the type of question you are going to get 100% right on your exam.

Extract from IELTS Model Reading Passage by KU Education

Thanks Jack and Rose to be the model here :)

" Titanic started it's maiden voyage in 1912  as planned .The ship was claimed to be unsinkable  Captain Smith ordered the crew to carry on the journey . Initially the path was  chosen to be north east. They had changed the direction after some time of the journey . Titanic traveled  towards north to reach the coast earlier than planned. ".Mr.Donald suggested  captain Mr.Smith to increase the speed of the ship ......."

Do the following statements agree with the views of the writer in the
reading passage?  on your answer sheet write:

Yes If the statement agrees with the writer
No If the statement contradicts the writer
Not Given If it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this

1)Titanic had a purpose on going towards the north
2)Titanic traveled fast
3)Titanic had it's second trip in 1912
4)Titanic returned  from north .

Ok ,let's see how to deal with this type of questions ?

1) Just read the paragraph again and find out whether  there was any reason /purpose to go north or not ?

"Titanic traveled north to reach the coast earlier..." ,so ,Yes ,there is a reason to go this direction and the meaning of this statement and the question is same (Titanic had a purpose on going towards the north )The answer is "Yes"

2)Scan the paragraph to find the speed of Titanic mentioned ,you shall realize that there is no information about the speed it went .(."Mr.Donald suggested  captain Mr.Smith to increase the speed of the ship" just it is a statement of suggestion only so we are not sure whether it had been carried out or not ,it is not given....)so the answer is "Not Given "

Here you have to pay more attention to understand ,when the statement contradicts the opinion given in the text ,then only you mark it as "False" ,when you able to feel ,that it is not mentioned elsewhere ,then you have to go for "Not Given" . You shouldn't  assume anything  from the given facts.

3)The year given in this statement makes the thing easy . You have to scan for 1912 within the passage. Ye,..s you got it "Titanic started it's maiden voyage in 1912" what do you mean by "Maiden Voyage " - The very first journey (Voyage -Journey),Right ,so the text clearly states that the trip Titanic had in 1912 was it's first journey not the second one. Your answer should be" False" as it clearly contradicts with the original text .(First Vs. Second )

4)I think now you are able to find out the correct answer.  ...."Titanic traveled towards north " mentioned in the reading passage ,but the statement 100% contradicts "Titanic returned  from north " means it traveled  right opposite . The answer should be "False "
